Classifying Metamorphic Rocks
2 Types of Metamorphic Rocks
- Foliated
- Metamorphic rock that has mineral crystals arranged in bands
- Form when rocks are subject to greater heat and pressure than normal
i. Causes minerals to align in a similar direction
- Under extreme heat and pressure minerals will recrystallize, lining up at a right angle to the force of pressure
- Unfoliated
- Metamorphic rock without a banded mineral texture
- Parent rock usually only contains one mineral
Crystals combine to become larger interlocking crystals |
