Classifying Metamorphic Rocks

2 Types of Metamorphic Rocks

  1. Foliated
    • Metamorphic rock that has mineral crystals arranged in bands
    • Form when rocks are subject to greater heat and pressure than normal

                                                                                                                                       i.      Causes minerals to align in a similar direction

    • Under extreme heat and pressure minerals will recrystallize, lining up at a right angle to the force of pressure
  1. Unfoliated
    • Metamorphic rock without a banded mineral texture
    • Parent rock usually only contains one mineral
Crystals combine to become larger interlocking crystals
